Mexican youth – positive anti-corruption programming
This article, from D+C, a German web based publication, reminds us of the continuing need to work with youth, as they are the present and future leaders in anti-corruption work. The article describes the work of an NGO, Mejor México, which “offers programs to students at universities in Mexico where they can learn what corruption is, why it's so dangerous, and how they can help combat it.”
These types of programs are traditional, but they do have impact and if done well, can have ongoing and lasting effects. The concepts of behavioral change in such programming is well done, and under the described programming, and the program “aims to involve university students in the development and implementation of strategies that promote behavioral change in the fight against corruption.”
What else should be done? This approach needs to be enduring, as education should be continuous and, in this case, such educational programming should be provided to the next cohorts of young people. Additionally, good evidence of the results should be presented, so that donors can provide the needed ongoing support. Ideally, these types of programs should be integrated into national curriculums and encouraged by both CSOs and donors. Children and youth always have an impact on adults and these programs provide effective programming.
