USA – anti-corruption messaging for the future
Though it is only six months into the US Trump administration, and US politicians are beginning to think about the future. This is important as messaging around anti-corruption is always important. In the past, simple messages, such as “corruption is bad” did not resonate and now with corruption being front and center, it is important that the politicians in the US define the needed messaging. The Hill is providing an early view of this – “Democrats looking to win the presidency in 2028 need to starting developing and testing messages on corruption to determine what best resonates with voters in order to win back the White House in 2028.” Some have focused on the private sector, pointing to Tesla sales to the State Department, while others are testing the general perceived corruption of the present administration.
Why is this important now? As I have noted in several previous articles, there has been a significant backsliding on corruption during the first six months of the Trump administration. As this has been worrisome, it is important to highlight the concerns, both regarding the public and the private sector. So much politics is messaging. We often see allegations and changes that do not seem to address the real problems, and corruption fall into that category. There are significant corruption issues in the US, limiting enforcement, as evidenced in the regressive changes to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, overlooking possible conflicts of interest, as well as a lack of transparency in governmental negotiations in such areas as tariffs. It is good to see that the Democrats are even now, looking to see what new messaging should be out there, as well as developing new legislation to address growing corruption issues.
