Corruption in seaports
One area that is important for countries which have seaports is how to address and understand corruption as it occurs in these environments. Consultancy.eu describes an EU project, POSEIDON, which has recently ended, and includes solutions to the serious issues of corruption and organized crime in European port operations in the Netherlands. As drug interceptions increase and local authorities seek solutions, the POSEIDON project put analysis into action. “The project also developed an EU standard for port supply chain integrity, with recommendations on addressing corruption in the port systems, including strengthening digital systems, promoting public-private partnerships, and continually monitoring new measures.”
Why is this important? The results from this project can be a basis for future work in ports worldwide as well as using the results to continue providing support to the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN), a leading international Collective Action initiative. This collective action, like other collective actions, is a collaborative effort by various stakeholders, including businesses, governments, and civil society organizations, to address corruption and bribery risks. POSEIDON as well as MACN allow for ongoing targeted actions in a very challenging area and reminders of these projects are important examples of what these projects can address.
