Ukraine – Importance of investigative journalism
So much of Ukraine’s anti-corruption has been tied to anti-corruption CSOs and activist that we forget about the importance of investigative journalist in corruption reporting. The EU Neighbors East highlights an activity which brings anti-corruption journalism information to many communities in Ukraine. The exhibit traveled to Dnipro, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk to bring interactive exhibits to local communities as well as providing a dialogue about integrity, accountability, and the power of investigative journalism. The program “…explored ten real stories of regional investigations that have already brought notable changes to communities, from halting illegal construction to exposing schemes in the land, municipal, and defense sectors.” This type of exposure provides local communities with a reminder of the role of investigative journalists in anti-corruption, which may not seem to be necessary in Ukraine, is still good for communities outside the capital.
Why is this important? As noted earlier, reminders of the role of investigative journalism in an environment where corruption has been constant is one additional tool, providing transparency and accountability when necessary. Additionally, this programming reminds the communities of the challenges tied to war time reporting, balancing the need for openness and support to the government. It is heartening to see that this type of programming is still being supported by donors, as the results of such activities are not easily quantifiable.
