Arms dealers and corruption
Arms dealing and corruption seem to go hand in hand, and unfortunately, as the world presently is a more dangerous place, we should not stop discussing the issues. The World Peace Foundation , seems to have intended to discuss the issue, but instead moved sideways when discussing the problem. ”Rather than focusing on the process of corruption, the evidence in the CT database, as laid out here and throughout the rest of this report, supports a systems approach, utilizing an adapted framework of state capture…. We must not lose sight of the moral corruption underpinning this all. If the CT shows anything, it is that there is no benefit in fighting for a less corrupt and more efficiently run arms trade. The accountability we advocate for must at its core penalize harm wreaked on society at all levels.”
Why should we care? As I noted, the world is a more dangerous place and as such, arms production is increasing, and accountability is absolutely necessary. We must not throw up our hands and say that as we have an issue defining the problem, we should give up and not aim for a less corrupt arms trade. It exists and we must hold governments and arms traders accountable and not accept anything less, the arms trade must be made more transparent and we, the citizens, should require more of our governments. This is a good article, but we must not use semantics to cloud what is most important, hoping that peace will minimize the issue of arms production.
