Texas and anti-corruption proposals

Anti-corruption seems to be more on everyone’s minds, and in the United States, a Texas Senate hopeful candidate, Colin Allred has rolled out his ideas for corruption prevention.  Axios reported on this and it is good to see that though there are significant examples of corruption within the US government, people are taking notice, with a greater focus on exactly the types of corruption we are seeing at present. His proposal “includes banning lawmakers from trading stocks and overturning the 2010 Supreme Court decision that allowed unlimited political spending from private entities.” These are part of his 12-point anti-corruption plan which includes ending gerrymandering, barring corporate political action committees and lifetime lobbying ban for lawmakers.

Why should we pay attention? Presently, with so many issues in the US on conflict of interest when looking at senior government officials, as well as the revolving door which exists between government officials and lobbying groups in Washington, DC, proposals such as these are essential. There is a present need to remind government officials that they are elected or appointed to represent their citizens, not to profit personally from their positions. This is an old concept which many in the Trump administration have overlooked and forgotten about and any publicity about these concepts is important during this very fraught time.
