Turkey – Corruption’s destruction of the country
This article, by the Nordic Monitor , highlights very clearly the impact of corruption in Turkey. As I noted previously, President Erdogan has come after his opponents, using corrupt levers, to eliminate political rivals, but that is just a tip of the iceberg. This present article references the OECD Economic Surveys: Türkiye 2025 which “warns that this downward spiral in governance integrity is eroding investor confidence, weakening the rule of law and threatening social cohesion. One of the core concerns expressed in the OECD report is the lack of an independent anti-corruption agency in Turkey.”
The OECD’s report highlights the issues of both reality and perception. The reality is that governmental corruption limits and even threatens investment in Turkey. As anti-corruption practitioners know corruption creates instability and even though sometimes there are short-term wins for corrupt actors, this does not provide reliable investment for more serious investors.
What needs to be done? In this instance, continuing information about the economic situation should be highlighted. And, as always shining a light on corrupt actions needs to continue. A belief that corruption can and should be addressed needs to be emphasized and encouraged and such reports are helpful to showcase these issues.
