100 days of corruption – US government’s actions
As an American citizen and an anti-corruption practitioner, I have been very disappointed in the Trump administration’s first 100 days. There have been so many changes that are weakening anti-corruption tools and regulations and this article by Public Citizen provides an overview of the many negative changes that have occurred. This article didn’t address the other dangerous changes which weaken our rule of law, including the changes within the US Department of Justice. As I have mentioned earlier, the US DOJ have weakened the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, as well as providing less support to our previous allies in their anti-kleptocracy work. Additionally, the Trump administration has driven many senior DOJ attorneys from their positions, which was part of another earlier post, and is another element in undermining rule of law institutions. What has been most shocking is the speed at which such destructive changes can occur.
What this means is we must continually keep monitoring and find ways to either challenge such actions or work with others who are employed in this area. As most anti-corruption advocates know, transparency and ongoing actions against corruption are essential, as well as constant exposure of negative behaviors. Though this is the first 100 days, the damage that is occurring will continue until there is a reversal, and presently the US anti-corruption regulatory environment has been weakened but has not yet been amended or abolished. This at least provides some hope.
