Asset seizures in Malaysia

Usually we see articles about corruption, referencing corrupt actions, without many results, except for hopeful future action. But in this article, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, we see the positive results regarding asset seizures.  The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission noted that “the investigation and recovery of assets carried out by the MACC was not an easy matter and required diligence, wisdom, cooperation and collaboration from other countries as well as the involvement of the media to provide balanced, informative and confidence-providing coverage to the people.”

What these actions by the MACC remind us that seizing corrupt actors assets, leading to monies reverting back into the national economies is very important. This provides messaging that anti-corruption actions can lead to imprisonment, but also that monies can be reverted to the government, in turn for society.

What more can be done? Though this seems superficial, just one more pat on the back, it is an important element of publicizing the ongoing fight against corruption. Articles similar to these provide positive reinforcement in the ongoing and important fight against corruption and governments should continue to encourage the media to publicize asset declarations and other anti-corruption actions.
