Lithuania decides to lead the way
Over the years Lithuania has quietly and effectively worked on anti-corruption reforms and actions. And finally, as TVP World has reported, it has taken a leadership role at the OECD, becoming the first country to take up the newly created position of country Chair of the OECD’s Anti-Corruption Network for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ACN). Though there is not much that can be done within this position, “the new position will allow Lithuania to help shape the strategic direction of the ACN and coordinate its activities, as well as to represent the network internationally.”
Why is this important? In this instance, the value of this position is the message it sends to the other members, as well as to the world at large, so that the OECD believes the network is important. What the OECD has messaged, is that network is important and this should be leveraged by the members, to remind their governments that the OECD has now moved to the next level, and Lithuania’s position is another indicator. This may not seem to be an important development, but small steps in anti-corruption are significant and this one, though small, is important.
