South Caucasus – corruption and state capture

This article highlights a new report regarding the type of corruption which is prevalent in the countries of the South Caucasus’, and this article offers a clear description of the situation on the ground. The Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime “provides a detailed mapping of how corruption manifests in each country, the networks and governance patterns that sustain it, and the geopolitical and historical factors that reinforce it.” It also highlights faint opportunities for reform, including strengthening independent oversight, building anti-corruption constituencies, and leveraging civil society and media to expose corrupt networks.

Why do we care? It continues to be important that we look at patterns and at all the types of corruption that exist. Yet, we must not say that it is all gloom and doom, as corruption is not a quick fit, but certainly a long slog. Along the way, these types of articles, which address regional issues, also provide anti-corruption actors, in government and CSOs, the opportunity to consider what is being done and what can be done regionally. Part of the psychology of corruption are articles such as these seem to provide more negative than positive views, and in some ways, the small glimmers of hope that exist, can help the activists and the donors see the small positive indicators. Information sharing is key to much of the work we do.
