Ukraine – bad laws, part 2

Even as the attacks by Russia have grown and are making life in Ukraine more difficult and challenging, some parliamentarians are trying undercut both the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. The EA Worldview  provides information regarding the new draft law №12439 which will hinder the fight against high-level corruption. “The bill has its second reading in Parliament. If it ultimately passes, the Bureau of Economic Security will lose the right to initiate proceedings for the embezzlement of state funds and property. That restriction would not only hinder Ukraine’s economic integrity. It could also jeopardize Kyiv’s campaign to join the European Union and financial assistance for its resistance against Russian aggression.” What this would mean that high level corruption enforcement would be weakened and the create difficulties for both NABU and SAPO, to move high level corruption forward

Why should we care? This newest draft law highlights the fact that there are some elements are not there to support Ukraine, but to support themselves and their cronies. Publicizing these activities by such parliamentarians is key to reminding activists, donors and the public that vigilance is important. Corruption is being minimized in Ukraine but there are still bad actors, and we must provide support and publicize the fact the activities of anti-corruption bodies are not there just to enforce the laws but are also there as reminders to corrupt officials that they may no longer act with impunity.
